What are the solutions for Alzheimers?

Many physicians and Alzheimer's researchers recommend keeping physically active, maintaining a healthy diet, and keeping socially active.  In the book, Keeping Your Brain Alive by Lawrence Katz, there are 83 neurobic exercises recommended.  The foundation for many of these exercises includes small changes in routine, such as brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand.  Other authors claim to keep your brain active you should do suduko, crossword puzzles, brainteasers, and reading (rather than watching a lot of television which is a passive brain activity, whereas reading is an active brain activity).  Another recommendation by many health care professionals is to remain positive.  Depression and anxiety can cause many older people to become less socially and physically active, leading to a decline in brain activity.

Strangely enough, nicotine-an antidepressant and chemical that stimulates the increase of acetycholine in the brain (an essential chemical needed for brain function and memory)-can help slow down the decline in the brain.  While I certainly do not suggest that people go out and start smoking, there is research being conducted on how to safely deliver nicotine to patients suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's.  An easier way to increase the acetycholine in your brain is to eat a good sized apple or drink a large glass of apple juice.  Unlike cigarettes, apples don't have such negative side effects!

Everyone should take a multi-vitamin and multi-mineral every day.  In addition there are several natural compounds that slow the rate of dementia:

Phospatidylserine is phospholipids that are found in all cells, particularly the brain.  It has been shown to support cognitive function.  DHA and EPA are omega-3 fatty acids found in cold-water fish.  These are healthy fats that are linked with promoting cognitive ability.  Antioxidants and vitamins C and E are known to fight free radical damage to brain membranes.  Ginkgo biloba has been used for centuries to improve brain function.  It is believed to support brain circulation and may help protect general levels of cognition.
